Mary, you might want to try http://www.satara-inc.com/prod.php?prodid=106 either 'Pack Cloth' which does have a nylon finish but is PVC-free, and wicks water nicely OR - there are more and more hemp curtains available now that have natural anti-microbial characteristics as well as wicking abilities. Also, there are many nylon alternatives out there that are PVC and toxin free.

I've tried using a canvas shower curtain. It has four disadvantages and one benefit. First bad thing is that it it is room darkening. Secondly the canvas shrinks each time you wash/dry it (by up to 8 inches). Thirdly, it's not very antibacterial or antimicrobial -- it gets moldy, mildewy and extremely smelly REAL fast. Lastly, it's not very attractive--crinkly, wrinkly in appearance. The benefit is that it is not PVC.

I will continue to experiment, maybe with linen.

I've really become faced lately with how plastic dependent our society is. It's not until this shower curtain fiasco or a plastic baby bottle study that we really realize it.

Taxes would be a great, I agree, but to get that legislation passed could be very difficult. We need more states to ban plastic bags as well (like CA). Funny how countries like Bangladesh are ahead of us on that front. Thanks for your comment.

If the impacts of PVC's are so dramatic, should a tax be considered to make the alternatives more cost-competitive? If the other varieties are curtains are produced at higher levels, they will likely fall in price, as well. Plastic bags are already taxed/banned in a few parts of the world, why not curtains?
